Salisbury Steak Meatballs Recipe

Juicy and flavorful Salisbury steak meatballs smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy make a comforting, hearty meal perfect for any occasion. Serve these over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for the ultimate dinner experience.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

•1 lb (450 g) ground beef

•1/2 cup breadcrumbs

•1 egg

•1/4 cup finely chopped onion

•2 garlic cloves, minced

•1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

•1 tsp Dijon mustard

•1 tsp dried parsley

•1/2 tsp salt

•1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy:

•2 tbsp unsalted butter

•1 cup sliced mushrooms (button or cremini)

•2 tbsp all-purpose flour

•2 cups beef broth

•1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

•1 tsp Dijon mustard

•Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the Meatballs

1.In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined (avoid overmixing).

2.Roll the mixture into 1.5-inch meatballs (about 20 meatballs).

3.Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it with oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 6–8 minutes. (They don’t need to be fully cooked at this stage.) Remove the meatballs and set aside.

2. Make the Gravy

1.In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté until softened and golden, about 5–7 minutes.

2.Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

3.Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps form. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Let the gravy simmer until it thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.

3. Combine and Cook

1.Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

2.Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the meatballs simmer in the gravy for 10–12 minutes, or until fully cooked (internal temperature of 160°F/71°C).

3.Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

4. Serve

•Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Tips and Variations

•Add Vegetables: Add sliced onions or frozen peas to the gravy for extra flavor and texture.

•Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour to make this dish gluten-free.

•Make Ahead: The meatballs and gravy can be made ahead and reheated gently on the stove.

These Salisbury steak meatballs are a crowd-pleasing, cozy dish that’s easy to prepare and bursting with flavor!
